Dr Marie-Christine CORMIER-SALEM

Director, IRD

As social scientist at the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), since 1982, she is a member of the "Local Heritage, Environment and Globalization" research unit (www.paloc.fr), based at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, in Paris, France. Through an approach combining history, social geography and political ecology, her research focuses on local strategies in the face of globalization, implemented in various regions of the South. She addresses issues such as  value of nature, adaptation to climate change, environmental justice, and local knowledge. Appointed as an IPBES expert, she was previously involved in the African assessment (2015-17) and is currently involved in the assessment on "sustainable use of wild species". She has over 500 publications to her credit, including 30 books  and 170 articles. Since January 2019, she serves as director of Agropolis Fondation, based in Montpellier, France (www.agropolis-fondation.fr).
